Triumph’s Leadership Committees

Here at Triumph Youth Services, each program has it’s own Leadership Committee made up of a group of youth leaders in the program as well as Triumph staff members, administration and/or therapists. Each committee meets at least one time each week. These committees are ran very similar to a council type meeting (city council, student council, etc). Each committee is made of a youth board including a President, President Elect, Vice President and Treasurer.  Along with a youth board that runs the leadership committee meetings each leadership committee also has other general committee members that make up the committee. The committee members make and carry motions, vote, and keep minutes. At each meeting they also discuss student’s in the program that are struggling and need more help or support, problems with teamwork, program issues. They also plan events, vote on “spotlight of the week”, organize leadership activities, workshops, functions and fundraisers.

We have found that this process is a very important part of leadership training and preparing these leaders for the future (life after Triumph). The goal behind the leadership committees is to empower our students to become decision makers. Not only do these leadership committees promote leadership but they also teach responsibility, charity, organization, teamwork, self worth, democracy, and communication skills (just to list a few).

Having a committee made up primarily of young men allows each committee member to have a voice and work to improve their system that they are involved in each and everyday within the Triumph program. We have found that these leadership committees encourage the students to set goals, and believe that they can accomplish difficult tasks working together in this capacity. Also the leadership program improves the Positive Peer Culture as a whole.

We are very proud of the young men and all they have accomplished over the years through the leadership committees.
