The Importance of Sports in Treatment

We like to introduce our students to playing sports, not just the typical big 3. We try to appeal to each student. According to the University of Wisconsin Hospital, the most important reason kids and teenagers play sports is because they are fun, they can relax and enjoy something. If we find that if our student can’t be motivated to play popular middle school and high school sports like basketball, football and soccer, we expose him to other sports that aren’t as common. For example, we go rock climbing, horse back riding, and fishing. Eventually, they will likely find a sport they like or is interested in. Triumph students will be motivated to try it. We think this is an important part of therapy because teens benefit from staying active. It is good for them physically as well as emotionally.

The innermost purpose and aim of Triumph Youth Services Positive Peer Culture program (sports are a part of this) is to develop self-worth, significance, dignity and responsibility in each of our students as they become committed to the positive values of helping and caring for others. Our goal is always to direct teens away from selfishness and conflict and direct them towards developing a character of concern for, and service to, others.

Our students want to be successful in life after Triumph, and sports can be a positive reinforcement on their journey…
