Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a mental health condition in which a child or adolescent displays an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, lack of respect, angry and annoying behavior toward people in authority. These constant behaviors interfere with the child’s or teens daily activities, as well as, activities and relationships at school and at home.
Many children and teens with ODD have Dual Diagnosis or Co-existing Disorders, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disabilities (LD), Mood Disorders (such as depression), and Anxiety Disorders. Some children and adolescents with ODD have a higher risk of developing a Conduct Disorder as an adult. Conduct Disorders are serious behavioral and emotional problems characterized by inappropriate social behavior, difficulty following rules and aggressive and destructive behavior.
It is important to note that ODD is not the normal defiant or disrespectful behavior and attitudes that teens exhibit as they try to establish their independence. A teenager with ODD has a lot of difficultly maintaining healthy relationships with parents, teachers and peers. Their behavior is not sporadic it is a pattern of disobedience, defiance and hostility at home, at school and in public.
