“Molly” or “Mandy” is becoming popular again. In the past two months local news stations across the United States have run stories about the drug. It is a synthetic drug. It is man-made, like “Spice” or “K2” which are street names for synthetic marijuana.
Molly is the powder or crystalline form of MDMA which in pill form is commonly known as Ecstasy, E, X, or XTC. Molly is most often taken in capsule form.
Like Ecstacy, Molly is a stimulant and causes euphoria, increased energy and a sense of intimacy with others. It is a considered a “club drug” because it is used in crowds of people at dance clubs.
The initial effects of Molly can last for 3 to 6 hours; however, there are other side effects that can last anywhere from a few days to a week. Common effects include:
- Feeling very alert initially
- Loss of sense of time
- Changes in perception
- Anxiety
- Agitation
- Sweats or chills
- Faint or dizzy
- Muscle tension,
- Nausea
- Blurred vision
- Increased heart rate
- Increased blood pressure
- Teeth clenching
- Confusion
- Depression
- Sleeping problems
As with any synthetic drug the purity can be compromised. Most recently, the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) reported that Molly capsules contained heroin, cocaine, bath salts (another dangerous stimulant) and other substances.
