Merriam Webster.com defines aggression as a forceful action or procedure (as an unprovoked attack) especially when intended to dominate or master; hostile, injurious, or destructive behavior or outlook especially when caused by frustration. So basically aggression is behavior where one person is trying to hurt another person. Aggressive behavior is not socially acceptable.
Aggressive behavior usually falls into three categories:
- Physical – hitting, bullying, pushing, shoving, tripping, kicking, stabbing, rape, shooting, gang involvement, etc.
- Verbal – teasing, threatening, name calling,
- Indirect – cyberbullying, rumor spreading, gossiping, getting others to exclude a person, etc.
Aggressive behavior is dangerous. Although teenagers are trying to figure out who they are, it is not right to hurt others intentionally in the process. Some studies indicate that aggressive behavior if not dealt with can lead to violence, problems in school, trouble with the law, substance abuse, dropping out of school or risky sexual behavior. Teenagers that display aggressive behavior need help.
Many times removing a teen from their environment is a great way to get them help. Triumph Youth Services is a residential treatment center for teenage boys and young men. They are licensed and offer and accredited school. They also provide a small, highly structured family-type environment for youth. This family-like community promotes a social environment that takes on both therapeutic and healing properties instead of maintaining negative behaviors.
