Computer Addiction, Is It Real? Part 1 of 2

When we think of addiction, we often think of alcohol or drug addiction. Can someone really have a Computer Addiction? So what is a Computer Addiction? Wikipedia defines Computer Addiction as a mental illness which causes the excessive use of computers to the extent that it interferes with daily life. As with anything; moderation is the key. We seem to take things to the excess and cause ourselves problems. Many jobs require computer use. Some people are on a computer all day at work. So when does computer use become an addiction? When using the computer dominates a person’s life there is a problem. Characteristics of addictive behavior:

  • Poor control over the behavior
  • Preoccupation with the behavior
  • Withdrawal symptoms
  • Continuing the behavior despite negative consequences
  • Denial
