Introduction
In Week 8 of our *7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens* series, we explore **Habit 3: Put First Things First**.
This habit is all about priorities. At Triumph Youth Services, we help teens identify what truly matters and teach them how to make intentional choices—especially when it’s hard.
What Does It Mean to ‘Put First Things First’?
Habit 3 encourages teens to focus on what matters most—before distractions, peer pressure, or emotions take over. It’s about managing your time and energy around your top values.
*‘The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.’*

Why This Is So Important for Troubled Teens
Many of our young men have lived in survival mode—reacting instead of planning, escaping instead of engaging.
Habit 3 teaches them:
– How to delay gratification
– How to say no to distractions
– How to prioritize what leads to long-term success
– Goal planning to keep what’s important in front of them
– Practicing ‘Big Rocks vs. Little Rocks’ time management
– Helping teens identify their personal ‘big rocks’ (e.g. recovery, school, family)
– Daily check-ins to stay on track Our staff models this habit through consistent structure, accountability, and guidance.
What Parents Can Do
At home, reinforce Habit 3 by:
– Helping your teen create a daily routine
– Encouraging them to keep a calendar or planner
– Praising them for prioritizing homework, chores, or therapy
– Modeling balance and focus in your own life
Conclusion
Habit 3—*Put First Things First*—gives teens the tools to build discipline and direction. It helps them take control of their time, their goals, and ultimately, their lives. At Triumph Youth Services, we see this habit transform chaos into clarity every day.
