Society says we value and encourage individuality, yet the media promotes conformity to a norm that is not attainable; the perfect complexion, the perfect body image, the right clothes, etc. Are we setting up our kids to fail? How are they going to fit into society?
Teenagers are trying to figure out where they fit all the time. They are maturing, experimenting with relationships, separating themselves from family and becoming an individual.
Ways teenagers fit in:
- School clubs
- Economic status
- Ability – such as sports, music, cheerleading, intelligence
- Use drugs
- Cliques and gangs
- Conform to a specific type of dress
- Use a specific type of language
- Hang out with similar friends
- Boy/girl relationships
- Use alcohol
- Risky behaviors
Everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging, acceptance and value for who you are.
Help your teen develop a healthy self image and positive self esteem. Help them explore who they are by listening to them and engaging them in conversations about their dreams and ideals. Help your teen view situations from different perspectives without being judgmental.
Call on others if you need it. We are in this together.
