Teenagers are known to take risks. However, sometimes a teen has a pattern of habitually acting without thinking about the consequences of their behavior. They have difficulty listening or have a pattern of aggressive behavior such as anger or destroying things. This is called impulsive behavior.
Impulsive behavior can be attributed by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Borderline Personality Disorder.
Impulsive behavior can include:
- Substance abuse
- Alcohol abuse
- Risky driving
- Risky sexual behavior
- Cutting or other self harm
- Lying
- Running Away
- Hitting walls or other things
- Stealing
- Angry outbursts
Typically the behavior provides a positive response or satisfies a need, relieves pressure; however, the long term consequences are negative.
Treatment for impulsive behaviors is therapy. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are both effective in teaching awareness of behaviors and consequences and learning healthy ways to deal with stress, pressure or impulsive thoughts and actions.
