Self-harm or Self-injury is to cause intentional damage, mutilate or hurt to part of the body. It is a common behavior among teenagers both male and female. Some examples of self-harm include: cutting, picking, burning, punching walls or self, swallowing objects, poisoning with pills or abusing alcohol or drugs.

There are groups on the internet for people who self-harm by means of cutting. There are videos, graphic photos, contests on who can design the most inventive cuts. Many times a specific type of cutting must be done and pictures shown to be accepted into these websites or social media clubs.

Typically self harming activities, such as cutting, are not a suicidal action. Nor is it a means of getting attention, except for the advent of the internet cutting clubs or cutting websites.

Cutting or any self injury activity needs to be addressed. There are several types of therapy that are effective in treating teenagers with self harm issues with the goal of replacing self harming with appropriate ways to cope with problems.

Triumph Youth Services has trained and experience staff and therapists to deal with teens with self injurious behavior. Call them today.
