Many studies have shown that the media including television ads, magazines, video games and social networks affect how young men view themselves. The media is defining body image for young men.

Who are these heroes of our young teenage males? Who are their role models? What are their values, morals or ethics? Are they selfish, self serving, seeking stardom, reinforcing negative stereotypes, being annoying, etc.?
Video games and cartoons often show images of men as belligerent, violent and uncaring. What about music icons and their alcohol or drug abuse? What about actors and the characters they portray?
One of the best things you can do is talk to your teen about how the media presents role models. Discuss the falsehoods and point out the people that emulate your personal and family values.
Do not allow the media to define self image or self esteem for your teenager. Be a positive force in encouraging your teen’s strengths. Help them recognize their weaknesses and acknowledge their actions that show the character and ethics in which you believe.
