What is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is the use of electronic technology to send threatening or mean voice, text or instant messages and emails; sexting; posting embarrassing photos; or spreading rumors using online social media.

More and more frequently we hear on the news and informational television programs about teenage suicides or teen violence being attributed to cyberbullying. There have been videos filmed on cell phones of teen beatings posted to online social media.

Of course, cyberbullying is not limited to social media sites. Sending any type of electronic communication with the malicious intent to hurt someone is cyberbullying. This includes emails, text messages, voicemails and instant messages.

Today’s technology makes it simple and quick to share intentionally hurtful information about others. This is becoming an increasing form of teen violence.
