Teenage suicide statistics change; however, it does not negate the fact that suicide is a serious issue. In an article published May 6, 2013, Medical News Today reported that a study by the Pediatric Academic Societies stated approximately 20% of U.S. teenagers that are considered suicidal have guns in their homes. They also reported that firearms are used in half of teenage suicides.
Medical News Today stated that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in people ages 10 to 24 and is number one for girls and number two, after car accidents, for boys. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state suicide is the 3rd leading cause death among 10 to 24 year olds.
In April 2013, there were several news reports regarding sexual abuse of a teenage girl, posting video and pictures on the internet (a type of cyberbullying) and subsequent suicide by the female victim. Other news stories report similar situations of gang rape, pictures being posted on the internet and the girl committing suicide.
There are other stories of sexting, bullying, cyberbullying, depression, exposing someone’s sexual orientation, sexual abuse and substance abuse leading to suicide.
Do not let your teen become a statistic. If your teenager is talking about suicide or has attempted suicide; get help now.
