What are the effects of Cyberbullying?
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, US Department of Health and Human Services, Cyberbullying Research Center (July 2012):
33% of teens have experienced threats online
25% of teen have been bullied repeatedly through their cells phones and on the internet
52% of teens do not tell their parents when cyberbullying occurs
Teens who are cyberbullied are more likely to:
- Use alcohol and drugs
- Skip school
- Experience in-person bullying
- Be unwilling to attend school
- Receive poor grades
- Become sad, moody or depressed
- Have lower self-esteem
- Have more health problems
- Become angry or agitated after viewing a text message or using the computer
- Become suicidal
