No one likes to be told what to do. Teenagers are no different and perhaps they have more of an aversion to authority because they are trying to become independent and typically over react to people that have influence or power over them. Even a suggestion to a teenager can cause a blow up.
As parents it is important to have an attitude of teaching and guiding when it comes to your teen. Discuss what is happening. Give your teen options and explain consequences. Teens, as we know, are natural risk takers and often do not think before they act. A parent’s guiding wisdom can go a long way. You would be surprised how much they hear and remember. They might not always act like they have heard you, but they have.
It is all about attitude with teens. Whether perceived or real, teens tend to feel like the world is out to get them. They want to experience the world, yet do not know how to put on the brakes when things get out of hand. Most of the time they don’t ask for help because they are embarrassed.
When your teenager continues to experience difficulties with teachers or the police things may be getting serious and help may be needed. If your teenage son is getting into trouble with the law, is bullying, becoming increasingly defiant, having trouble in school, is very angry, etc, it may time for help.
Your teen may have Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), in which case treatment is needed. Teens with ODD need structure and to learn how their negative thoughts affect their behavior.
Whether is your teen is just being defiant and acting out toward authority or if he has ODD, you are not alone. Reach out for help. Triumph Youth Services can answer your questions and give your suggestions.
